Investigating the Effect of Soil Organic Matter on Gypsum Block Calibration for Measuring Soil Volumetric Moisture Content

Authors

Abstract:

Continuous soil moisture assessment and evaluation is essential for irrigation management and planning. One of the common methods for measuring the moisture content of the soil is the use of a gypsum block. The use of gypsum blocks in some cases, including the presence of organic matter in soil, may cause an error in the measurement of moisture. For this purpose, a laboratory study was conducted to provide a calibration equation for gypsum block in silty clay soil with organic matter. This study was done in three treatments including different percentages organic matter in two replications in the Laboratory of Aburaihan Campus of Tehran University. In this experiment, after putting gypsum blocks in distilled water and applying the treatments, moisture changes and the blocks’ conductivity were measured at different times. The results showed that the gypsum block reading and the measured volumetric moisture content increased with increasing organic matter content. Also, for silty clay soil containing organic matter, the polynomial equation Y = 7.08X3-0.01X2 + 0.65X-0.76 with a standard error of 3.09 and a correlation coefficient of 958.0 was obtained after fitting all the data.

Evaluation and Calibration of a Soil Moisture Sensor for Measuring Poultry Manure or Litter Moisture Content

Moisture content (MC) of poultry manure or litter affects its ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions. Relating MC to ammonia emission of manure or litter is thus of importance to modeling and/or managing ammonia emissions from the manure sources. Development of such relationships would require the knowledge of ammonia emission and the concomitant MC of the manure or litter. This work was carried out to char...

Assessing Relation of Soil Hydrophobicity and Soil Water Content and Determining Threshold Moisture of Organic Soil Samples

Soil water content is the most effective factor associated with the hydrophobic and hydrophilic changes in a soil. Water repellency in soils, is not a permanent feature; it can be reached in the dry season and reduced or eliminated in the wet season It can be said that in terms of moisture, there is a critical region that is defined as the threshold moisture content, where in lower moisture, th...

Effect of Soil Moisture Content on the Splash Phenomenon Reproducibility

One of the methods for testing splash (the first phase of water erosion) may be an analysis of photos taken using so-called high-speed cameras. The aim of this study was to determine the reproducibility of measurements using a single drop splash of simulated precipitation. The height from which the drops fell resulted in a splash of 1.5 m. Tests were carried out using two types of soil: Eutric ...
